Summer plans... initiated!

I cannot believe the end of school is arriving O_O  What, I'm graduating?

Before all the nostalgia sweeps me away, the warmer weather reminds me that my friends and I are going on a summer trip!  ... TO ASIA.  MWAHAHAHA, I'm so excited!

Plans are still to be finalized (and *of course* I will post pictures of our adventures)!  :D  I want to trade in my Cannon DSLR for a lighter camera for travelling... Any suggestions on types of cameras?  ^^  Something that made me super happy this morning was a picture I found on tumblr:

Steamed PANDA buns!  They're so cute @__@  And look delicious as well ^^

I'm pumped!  Our crew has a lot of fun personalities too, so this will be another trip to remember :)

Spring Break- LA Day 3 and 4

Day Three!  Another day to step out into the unknown, to explore, and to really experience LA, yeah!  So pumped!

... except that I ended up with a case of food poisoning x_x  which meant I was running to the restroom every 15 minutes and feeling sorry for any victims who needed to use the restroom afterwards, haha ^^''

But it was so sunny outside!

And my friends were going out to play too :o

Phooey~  Oh well, guess that's what happens when you complain about always being constipated on trips, yeah?  Haha, so lady-like, giving up this oh-so-interesting information to y'all ;)  I stayed in the hotel and slept , my favorite past time :)

But they went to a dim sum place that Sean's daddy recommended called Sea Harbor Restaurant.  They said it was pretty nice, but I wasn't there and I'm not a dim sum fanatic~  Elaine and the others brought back food for me, awwww~ ^^

Can't read Chinese?  TOO BAD.  Haha, just kidding :)

I didn't take a picture of the first one, because it's not very photogenic.  It's congee!  Which is basically porridge (or as old English people would call it, GRUEL, haha :P).  This one had peanuts inside~

And VEGGIESSSS!  My favorite ^^

They know me so well, thinking of me and dropping off congee and veggies, because mushy rice and veggies is like my soul comfort food ^^  Josh bought me medicine at a Walgreens, and Debra got me a buddy to keep me company for the rest of the day while they were out  :)

Domo-kun buddy! :3  I just kept flinging this dude around for 2 hours before going to sleep, haha~

After taking the medicine, I felt better, so when they came back before dinner, I was up to go with them to K-town! :D  We went to Soowon Galbi restaurant, which was so popular that there was valet service!  O_O  Apparently they are famous for this one type of meat~

Elaine, Debra and Josh considering the menu

Fireeeeee... warmmmm

All the bancham were delicious!

Salad

Waitress helping out!

Elainey-pooh :D

GREEEEEN in the sea of protein, hehe~

The restaurant focuses on high quality, so there's no all you can eat option~  so there are Options with various choices of meat.

And meat they got!

My tummy was still on strike, so I opted for fish, om nom nom ^^

Grilled mackerel!!

So large but so good!

It was yummier than Jun Won, maybe because it was a different type of fish, but it wasn't bitter at all.  Just delicious, SUPER juicy, and ... I may be crazy, but slightly sweet?

Afterwards, we paid a visit to LACMA, LA's museum of contemporary arts, but it was closed since it was so late.  So we went on our way to the most famous landmark they have.

Debra *wuvs* LACMA!  hehe~

Oh?  Where's this?

It's the city sculpture!  Title: Urban Light~ by Chris Burden

202 restored city lights!

Nestled in LA on the side of the road

Quite amazing to walk through ^^

ATTACKKKK

It's like walking in Wonderland!

... or the runway for Josh, hehe~

Lots of people there enjoying the sites and taking pictures ^^

This kind of reminded me of the Egyptian columns they have in temples...  Wonder what hide-and-seek would be like!

Anna banana!

Meh?

Ahh!  I didn't realize Josh was sneaking up on me~

Oh... maybe I did :P
Pooh, I'm not the star of the photo :(  Hehe!

Afterwards, we headed back to the hotel to rest for a nice sleep (MORE SLEEEEEP) :P  Get ready for Day 5! :)

Nom nom nom

Well, howdy there :)  Coming from Texas, you'd think a girl like me would be used to sinking my teeth into cornbread and a steamy bowl of chili on a daily basis, right?  :D  Hehe, actually, totally not!  My parents pretty much *only* eat Asian food =_=  And Indian food isn't even included in that D:  So when I'm at school, I like to try new things.  Actually, my first experiences with American "comfort food" was at WashU when I came as a freshman.  I ordered from the Comfort station EVERY SINGLE DAY.  My happy memories from freshman year included meatloaf, mac 'n cheese, turkey tetrazinni, shepherd's pie, Coca-Cola steak with steak fries, and chicken pot pie.  The servers knew me by name, and I swear a few of them were in together on a scheme to fatten me up... I gained weight exponentially!  :P

But my school also has a lot of diversity when it comes to options; it's not just all American food.  ... Otherwise you'd probably find a very.. uhm.. heavy student population waddling around campus.  ;)  At our student center, our servery offers (Americanized) Chinese food, although they've been introducing Korean and Thai options too~  Pizza, salad, Mexican food, a grill, vegetarian, rotisserie food, and a sit-down restaurant are all places we can choose from in one building for lunch!  The Mexican food station and the sit-down restaurant are open for dinner too~  ^^

Besides sounding like I am trying to sell you my school, haha, I just wanted to write down my thoughts and how much I appreciate being a student here.  I'm not lying when I tell people one of my major factors for choosing WashU over other schools was the food XD  They're really big on "being green."  Recycling?  That's weak sauce.  We do that ANNNNNND compost.  HA.  Hehe~  All our food is from a 50mile radius or something like that... I'm not too clear.  I'm not a crazy advocate of slow food or a localvore, etc, but after being here for 4 years, it made me realize how lucky I am to have attended a university that really supports sustainability   I mean, we even have water-saving toilet flush options (push down for solids and up for liquids, hahaha)!  When I go back to Texas for medical school, I'm going to miss all of this.  I'm one of those people who will feel extremely irked when they see another person throw away a water bottle instead of recycling @_@''

ANYWAYS.  Let's look at some pictures of food, shall we? :P

Tuesday's lunch

This came from the vegetarian station at our student center.  They had Indian food today, so there was creamed spinach and some aromatic mixture of cauliflower and tofu.  I have no idea how legitimate or authentic this food is, but mannnn, it sure is delicious ^^  The spinach is usually chopped up instead of being whole and leafy, but I really like the leafy version too!  And the steamed BBQ pork bun (叉烧包) came from the Asian station.  Lunch is sooo gooood :)

As many of y'all know, 2013 is year of the snake!  HKSA(Hong Kong Student Association) held a banquet at Wei Hong Restaurant, and each table was named after an animal from the Chinese zodiac.  We were the Pig table!  ... which was very fitting, as we eat *a lot.*  When it was time to leave, we surveyed the other tables, and most of the other tables still had plates of food left!  We cleaned everything off our dishes XD

Rice cakes with filling in ginger soup ^^

So Chinese food aside, I also had Korean food!  My Chinese TA, Jin, had never really tried Korean food (SUCH A SIN! :P), so we went to Seoul Garden for his first introduction to what may possibly the best food on Earth.  ... just kidding.  Deciding which is the best is impossible for me D:

Seafood pajeon

Appetizer!  Seoul Garden's pajeon (pancake thing) was quite large.  It was bursting with green onions (a major plus for me), and was a little light on the seafood, but I definitely found some octopus and shrimp swimming around in the pajeon.  Er, more like stuck, but yeah.

Jin isn't allowed to eat until I get a picture, haha

Next up, bancham!  Little cute side dishes that go along with most Korean meals

This is probably my favorite part about Korean meals.  They're so colorful that it makes me wanna cry!  .. with tears of *joy*.  I asked Daniel a lot about where Koreans get their vegetables, and it's pretty much all from the bancham, although I still feel like there isn't enough veggies for that ._.''

Grilled mackerel

Yep.  My mandatory grilled mackerel that I have been getting when I go to Korean restaurants!  Seoul Garden's rendition was a large, succulent, and juicy piece.  It was so oily (the good oily)~~~

Oh yeahs, although pajeon might be an expensive appetizer ($13ish), it's definitely big.  I ate the leftovers for the next day's lunch and dinner ^^

And they are very photogenic leftovers!

Speaking of Korean food, I took a Korean out for some froyo!  Hehe, it was a random Thursday after my lab, and Daniel wanted to grab something to satisfy a sweet tooth.  Off we went to Tutti Frutti!  But Elaine just got off work, so we missed her :(

Om nom nom

Err, yes.  This is what I look like after lab >_<  I need a haircut!

NO WORRIES.  I'm getting one Tuesday.  hahaha~

After filling our tummies with froyo, somehow we decided to go to O! Wings for some Korean-style fried chicken.  It was my first time eating chicken wings :D  (been to Buffalo Wild Wings, but I just sat inside and didn't eat anything / just chilling with my sister while she ate)  I thought it was going to be an uber messy process, but eating wings is actually really easy even with the bones :)

Our dinner feast

We ordered 20 wings for the two of us, but they actually gave us a lot of extra wings and ended up with 24 O_O  Daniel says they do it all the time, and it's probably because we had 3 sauces, so they tried to even it out.  The sauces we chose were: Original (tasted very Asian :D), Honey Mustard, and Thai Chili Lime.  The Thai chili lime was a little too spicy for me, but I enjoyed the other two while Daniel finished off the hot wings before helping me eat the others.  We finished all of it, and apparently it's a lot to eat that much o_o''  I went to dance practice afterwards and told my friends I went to O! Wings, and they freaked out when I said we split 24 wings.  But to my defense, I *only* ate 11, and Daniel ate 13 ;)

Super messy, but super yummy ^^

Yay!  Thanks Daniel for introducing me to K-style wings~ ^^  Yes.  That's quite attractive =o=''

Spring Break- LA Day 2

Good mornnnning~ ^^  Another Spring Break post!

BUT WAIT.  THERE'S MORE!  ... haha, I sound like an infomercial trying to sell you a juicer for only 4 easy payments of $19.99 plus $5 shipping and handling ;)

Nah, just wanted to put in a quick shout-out to my lovely Mom!!  Why?  Because today is her birthday ^_^   During winter break, we were at the mall together and she saw a purse that she really liked.  Being as frugal as she is, she didn't want to buy it for herself (yet... she encouraged me to buy myself TWO purses?  "You work!  You're young!  Girls need purses!"  Wait... doesn't she work too?  Doesn't makes sense, haha).  So I bought it online last month and had it shipped back home addressed to me.  Then I told my parents that I was expecting a package and for them to help save it for me.  So her purse is secretly chilling on my desk.  Then I wrote her a birthday message on a birthday card and mailed it to her.  It has instructions to go to my desk and open the box.  You always spoil me, so I hope that, at least this one time, I get to spoil you.  Happy birthday, Mommy :D   But no worries, I'll spoil you a lot in the future, hehehe~

BUT ANYWAYS.  Spring break!

Time for a whole day at Six Flags in California!!  Yes, yes, Six Flags are everywhere, so why not go to Universal Studios or Disneyland?  It's okay-- the future always holds a few opportunities to visit if I ever go back to SoCal... hopefully!

Our hotel :)

Wait, did you want pictures of us at Six Flags?  ... I don't have any pictures of us wheeeeee-ing are way around Six Flags, haha :P  But we left in the morning, dropped our hearts off the roller coasters, ate Panda Express for lunch (hahaha), and left the amusement park in high spirits!

But afterwards, we went to Little Tokyo to nom on some famous and legit ramen at Daikokuya!  I've had Book's version of ramen (homemade in his apartment!), ramen in Taiwan, and ramen in St. Louis.  But it was time to try ramen made in the heart of mini-Japan :P We put our names down and waited for an hour or so before we entered the restaurant.

Waiting outside... a little chilly, but nice weather compared to STL!

Even huskies like ramen, hyu hyu!  ^___^

Slightly blurry pictures, but the doggie looks just like Balto, with the exception of the black markings around the eyes (which makes Balto *much* cuter, haha :P).  The husky was allowed to go in (but even the waitresses were confused about what to do), and it quietly laid at his owner's feet.  WHY ISN'T BALTO THIS WELL TRAINED?!!!  ... Oh.  Well, I guess it was me who trained him, huh... er...  Hi!  hehe~

Long day for Hyung...  Fighting!  ^__^

Interior of Daikokuya

Oh my!  This would definitely be a place I would visit for dinner by myself if I ever lived near Little Tokyo.  They have a nice "bar seating" area, so patrons won't feel bad about taking a whole table to themselves.  The six of us squeezed in at a booth and took in the scene.

First up, (clockwise from top left) salad, shredded pork rice bowl, pork cutlet rice bowl

Debra and Josh both got ramen combos-- a huge bowl of their signature ramen + a small bowl of Daikokuya's other entrees (like terriyaki chicken, tonkatsu, etc).  Wow!  So much food~  This place would be great to go to when you're super hungry; prices aren't insanely expensive, even if Daikokuya is rated the best ramen place in SoCal! :D

And then the signature Daikoku ramen arrived!

MAN.  LOOKS INSANELY DELISH, YAH?

Let's zoom up a little closer ;)

... not much zoomed in, but I just had to show off the ramen some more, tee hee ;P

There was a MOUNTAIN of green onions perched on the nest of bean sprouts.  Really pretty ^^  The meat was no-joke-melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the broth was hearty, savory, and a wee salty.  Miso based!  I liked the egg, which was cooked just right, so the yolk was a molten and bold yellow.  Om nom nom!  The noodles were also nice and soft (which I like!  al dente = no good to me!)~  @_@

Hehe, silly faces!

Okie, time to enjoy the food!

Every slurp, every sip, every chew, and every moment of savoring Daikoku's ramen was an awesome experience for me.  I'm pretty sure I'm near the crazy end for enjoying my food, but that bowl of ramen made me day!  Mmmmm~  It was so good that I continued to sip the soup until the broth was totally gone (had to restrain myself from picking up the massive bowl to my face to finish the soup XD)!  Needless to say, I pretty much waddled back to the car while fighting an onset of food coma.  *shuffle shuffle*

Yayyy, great recommendation, Debra!  Really enjoyed spending another day with everyone, whether it was laughing at whoever was screaming on the roller coaster rides with me or just sight seeing through the windows while in the car.  Day 2 complete!  :D
